The Ming city wall and a gate tower in Nanjing at dusk

Destination

Nanjing

A former capital, still keeping its own time.

Discover the city

Six dynasties of history, one thick city wall.

Nanjing sits about an hour and a half by high-speed train from Shanghai, and it feels like a different country of the same nation. This was the capital of six dynasties and later of the Ming and Republican governments, and the evidence is everywhere along the ground: a 35-kilometre Ming city wall you can still walk on, the mausoleum road at Zhongshan, the lakes and plane trees of the old city, and a very large student population that keeps the streets young. Travel is straightforward once you are here — metro, taxi and a compact centre. As a medical city Nanjing is a serious one: several large public tertiary hospitals, including a well-known Traditional Chinese Medicine hospital, sit within the city, and they are the reason some visitors add a stop here. We list what those hospitals publish publicly and we do not overstate what we can arrange. For most travellers Nanjing is the historic half of the trip: two or three days, a lot of walking, and better food than its tourist reputation suggests.

Moments worth making time for

Ming City Wall at Zhonghua Gate

The largest surviving city gate in China, built in the 14th century as a fortress of vaulted chambers inside the wall. Climb up and you can walk the wall itself for a long stretch, looking down over the old south of the city.

Sun Yatsen Mausoleum & Zhongshan

The 1929 mausoleum of Sun Yatsen, reached by a long flight of stone steps up the Purple Mountain, aligned on the city axis. Allow a half day: the surrounding hills also hold the Ming Xiaoling tomb and a great deal of shade.

Confucius Temple & the Qinhuai River

A Song-dynasty Confucian temple complex on the Qinhuai River, surrounded by lanes of snack stalls and teahouses. Busy and commercial, but the evening boat rides under the lit bridges are worth doing once.

We only present healthcare institutions from our own reviewed register. Where a suitable resource has not yet been verified, our team will research it manually and reply in person rather than suggest an unverified option.

Verified means the public information — name, address, departments and languages — was checked by our team against an official source. It is not a medical quality certification, a partnership, or a guarantee of an appointment.
